Google Bard was set to launch in the EU this week

“We’ve proactively engaged with experts, policymakers and privacy regulators on this expansion,” Bard product lead Jack Krawczyk, and VP of engineering Amarnag Subramanya, wrote in a blog post. Instead of being incorporated directly into Google’s search engine, Bard can be found on its own website. Gemini Ultra has outperformed Pro on all major tests and is multimodal by default. This means it can process and understand video, image, audio and text input natively. The problem is nobody outside of Google’s select group of testers has been able to verify the claims. Users can test Bard with Gemini Pro for text-based prompts for themselves — starting today and for free — simply by visiting the chatbot like they regularly would.

Google was apparently preparing to launch Bard in the EU “this week,” Irish Data Protection Commission Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle said. In other Bard-related finds, Google Search is also preparing a more prominent message encouraging you to upgrade your Assistant to include Bard AI features. Appearing above the typical Assistant sheet, a new popup suggests a few ways that AI can come in handy and offers a “Try now” button. The law, which was implemented in 2018, protects individuals from the release of their personal data with the exception of obtaining information for criminal activities and threats to public security. Google is making its ChatGPT rival Bard available to a wider audience today, launching the generative AI chatbot in more than 40 languages and finally bringing it to the European Union (EU) after an initial delay due to data privacy concerns. Google’s announcement follows the launch of San Francisco-based startup OpenAI’s online chatbot ChatGPT in November. Earlier this year, Microsoft added a similar chatbot to its search engine Bing. There are three versions of the Gemini multimodal AI model with Gemini Pro the mid-tier version that currently powers Google Bard.

Meanwhile, as also seen above, Dylan Roussel managed to enable the actual popup window that you’ll use to submit new prompts/questions to Assistant with Bard. We first saw this design in Google’s initial previews of its AI tool at the Pixel 8 event in October. Using the three buttons along the bottom, you can type or speak a message and/or share a photo with the Assistant.

These survey results are unexpected, given ChatGPT’s user base’s fast expansion and widespread interest in AI chatbots like Bard.

Images can be used in prompts — users can upload images with prompts (only in English for now) and Bard will analyze the photo. New options allow users to pin, rename and pick up recent conversations with Bard. And Bard’s responses can now more easily be shared with the outside world through links. Before Gemini, when Bard first launched, it was supported by a lightweight model version of Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).

Did you know OpenAI records your conversations with ChatGPT by default, and uses this info to train its system? As for Bard Advanced’s availability, the aforementioned code suggests it could be tied to Google One (although it’s unclear what subscription tier would be required) but no details have been confirmed as of this writing. Google is currently testing its capabilities with a small group (which also might be why the code is visible). There’s no exact release date for Bard Advanced yet, but Google said in December that it would be available “early next year,” so it could launch at any time. Google Bard Advanced is coming, and it may represent the company’s first attempt to charge for an AI chatbot. The code on Bard’s website shows the opportunity to get three months free of Bard Advanced — implying that it will come at a cost after that.
